How I Sized a Fireplace TV Stand for My 65-Inch TV

When we upgraded to a 65-inch TV, I almost ordered a fireplace stand the same night without thinking about it. I’m glad I didn’t, because the one I’d picked would’ve looked ridiculous — like a big TV balancing on a too-small table. Here’s the sizing process I actually used, and the one thing I’d do differently.
The rule I follow: stand wider than the TV
Your TV’s width — not its diagonal — is what matters. A “65-inch” TV is about 57 inches wide. The look I (and most people) find pleasing is a stand that’s at least as wide as the TV, and ideally a few inches wider on each side. So for our 65, I wanted a stand around 58 to 65 inches wide. We landed on a 58-inch one and honestly I wish I’d gone a touch wider — it works, but a 62 would’ve looked more grounded.
Don’t forget the weight rating
This is the part people skip. Check the stand’s stated top weight capacity against your TV’s actual weight (it’s in the manual or on the box). A 65-inch TV is usually 40-60 lbs, which almost any decent stand handles — but if you’ve got a big 75 or 80-incher, double-check. The Walker Edison Wren in my roundup is the one I point people to for the larger sets because it’s rated well above what those TVs weigh.
Height matters more than you’d think
Sitting on a couch, you want the center of the screen roughly at eye level. Most of these stands put a 65-inch TV’s center a bit high — fine for most rooms, slightly craned-neck if your sofa is low. Measure from your floor to your seated eye level (mine’s about 42 inches) and compare it to the stand height plus half your TV’s height. I learned this after the fact. Learn from my neck.
Quick sizing cheat sheet
- 55″ TV (~48″ wide): 50-58″ stand
- 65″ TV (~57″ wide): 58-66″ stand
- 75″ TV (~66″ wide): 68-80″ stand
Get the width right and everything else falls into place. Once you’ve got your number, my main list of picks notes the TV size each one fits, and if you’re still deciding whether you even want the heater, I covered whether these actually heat a room separately.
